It has been often said that a true leader is one who shines in a crisis as he leads his followers through to safety and to a new normal.

In these unprecedented times that we find ourselves in, the world needs leaders and lots of them; in diverse fields, with diverse sets of capabilities and possessing the ability to survive and manage to find opportunities to help. Nurturing leadership is very important and educational institutions play a very big role here.

I am very proud to say that over the past 3 decades Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies (SSCBS), constituent college of the University of Delhi (DU) has been encouraging entrepreneurship, innovation and a can-do spirit. Students from our college have made their mark in national and international fora; we are recognized as a great learning institution by multiple agencies of national repute such as NAAC (Grade ‘A+’) and India Today (Best undergraduate college in India for undergraduate management education for 4 consecutive years i.e., 2020-2023).

Leadership encompasses vision and thrives on the unstinting support of all the stakeholders. It is this vision that helped set up the college in 1987 and has inspired us to follow Jack Welch’s maxim of being either the 1st or 2nd or exiting the business. SSCBS has a long list of firsts to its credit; undergraduate management program in India; introduce the semester system in DU; offer a PG course in cyber security and law; undergraduate DU college to have dedicated placement support and undergraduate college in India to have a government supported incubation center. We are constantly striving for all-round development of all SSCBS stakeholders.

Leadership needs an effective foundation to support soaring ambitions. Through the efforts of our teachers and administrators, we are committed to produce leaders of tomorrow with our pedagogy gunning for this via an eclectic mix of classroom teaching, case studies, practicals, experiential learning, classroom presentations, guest lectures, group activities and such. A strong system of extracurricular activities engenders holistic development, focused on personality development and honing of career friendly skills and capabilities.

Great leaders delegate effectively and encourage their followers to grow. Our students learn responsibility through their extracurricular efforts and our elected student council; becoming both effective leaders and proactive followers as the situation calls for it.

SSCBS is built upon principles of cohesion, learning and devoted engagement. This helps us offer great quality students for campus placements for jobs, internships and live projects through our dedicated placement cell. Great companies such as Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Bain Capabilities Network, McKinsey Client Capabilities Network, L.E.K. Capability Network, CRED, D. E. Shaw, Accenture, KPMG, EY, PwC, Grant Thornton, FischerJordan, FTI Consulting, Nomura etc. recruit our students, offering competitive packages (2022-23) average was Rs 11.11 LPA the highest being Rs.44.45 LPA for roles including consulting, investment banking, risk consulting, business research and data science etc.

Our students have also gone on to study in globally renowned institutes like Harvard, Chicago Booth, Tuck School, Columbia, U-Penn, IIMs, ISB, XLRI, FMS, etc.

Our alumni are our pride and joy, carrying the SSCBS name to various important positions and in stellar companies across the globe.

Recognizing our capabilities, the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) chose our college to set-up a dedicated incubation center. We now have the capability to encourage students to grow in traditional careers and also strike out on their own via entrepreneurial ventures. Multiple startups have received seed funding, mentorship support and infrastructural facilities and we tread hopefully.

Charles Darwin contended that evolution is an ongoing process and we can see it effectively at SSCBS. Our course pedagogy has evolved over time to suit current needs and we have continually added new tools and courses to our arsenal to help equip our students for whatever challenges they may end up facing.

All of this has held us in good stead as we attempt to negotiate these trying times. I am really happy to say that these trying times have brought out the best amongst us. Our faculty and staff; supported by IT facilities from the DU, made a near seamless switch to digital learning and support services, providing a troika of educational services viz. classes (via Google Classroom, Cisco’s Webex and Zoom); course material and digital library services to our stakeholders. We are now contributing to the community with knowledge sharing webinars.

As we all shelter in place and do our bit to bring humanity out of perhaps one of the biggest threats it has faced in the past few centuries, I extend my prayers and good wishes for you and your loved ones. Like all good things come to an end, the fog of despair and negative circumstances is equally burned away by the rays of resilience, impeccable conduct, high moral behavior, mutual respect and care for all.

The future holds tremendous promise for all of us and we are cautiously hopeful of being able to grow and thrive in whatever circumstances life throws at us.

The future begins with you. Let’s create it together, and be proud of our contributions in making SSCBS, our country and the world a better place to live in for all.
